해외한국학자를 만나다: 태국 부라파 대학교

1. 먼저 한국학진흥사업단 뉴스레터 독자들을 위해 자기소개를 부탁드립니다.

안녕하십니까? 저는 태국 부라파대학교(Burapha University) 동양어문학과에서 한국어를 가르치고 있는 우라이완 짓펜톰 김(Uraiwan Jitpenthom, Kim)이라고 합니다.

2. 현재 태국에서 한국 문화에 대한 관심이나 한국학 연구, 교육 현황은 전반적으로 어떠한가요?

태국에서 한국 문화에 대한 관심은 아주 높은 편입니다. 특히 K-POP, 한국 드라마, 한국 음식의 인기가 아주 많습니다. 부라파대학교 한국어전공에 입학하는 학생들에게 전공 선택의 이유를 물어보면 대부분 K-POP이라고 합니다. 또한 대학교 근처에는 10곳의 한국 음식점이 생겼으며, 넷플릭스 등을 통해 한국 드라마가 전 세계로 방송되면서 한국 드라마도 꾸준한 인기를 끌고 있습니다.

1999년 태국 송클라대학교 빳따니 캠퍼스에서 처음으로 한국어학과가 생긴 이후, 현재는 18개 대학에서 한국어, 한국어교육, 한국학을 전공으로 가르치고 있습니다. 주태국한국교육원의 자료에 따르면 2022년을 기준으로 하여 180여개 중고등학교에서 46,000여명의 학생들이 한국어를 배우고 있으며, 태국의 한국어 학습자 수는 전 세계 한국어 학습자의 25%를 차지한다고 합니다.

태국 내 한국학 교육 기관은 송클라대학교 푸켓 캠퍼스의 한국학과, 쭐라롱껀대학교의 한국학 석사과정이 있습니다. 이외에도 각 대학의 한국어학과에서는 3-4학년부터 한국의 역사, 문화, 문학 등 한국학 관련 과목을 설정하여 가르치고 있습니다. 10년 전부터는 대학교 교수들을 중심으로 한국학 학술대회를 매년 개최하고 있으며, 1~2년 전부터는 대학생들을 위한 한국학 학술대회도 개최하고 있습니다. 그러므로 태국에서의 한국학은 여러 연구물들이 나오기 시작하는 단계라고 할 수 있습니다.

사실 한국학 분야의 교육과 연구는 한국어교육과는 다릅니다. 한국학이 한국어교육보다 규모 면에서 훨씬 큽니다. 그러므로 한국어교육과 비교하여 한국학의 성과를 성급히 판단해서는 안 될 것입니다. 오히려 한국학 분야는 규모가 큰 만큼, 좀더 많은 시간을 두고 다루어야 할 과제라고 생각합니다.

3. Burapha University 에서 진행되는 한국학 연구, 교육 활동 및 그 결과나 성과에 대해 소개를 부탁드립니다.

부라파대학교는 인문사회대학 동양어문학과에 한국어전공이 2000년부터 설치되어 있습니다. 또한 인문사회대 안에 한국학센터도 설립되어 있습니다. 한국학 관련 분야는 주로 한국학센터에서 진행하고 있습니다. 한국학센터는 한국학 학술대회, 한국어교육세미나, 한국 문학 번역 출판, 한국어말하기대회 등을 주관하였습니다.

4. 2022년부터 해외한국학씨앗형 초기단계 사업을 참여하면서 현재까지 과제는 어떻게 진행되고 있으며 현장에서 겪는 어려움이 있다면 무엇일까요?

현재 우리 부라파대학교에서는 <태국인 학습자를 위한 기초 한국학 진흥 사업>이라는 과제로 한국학중앙연구원의 해외 한국학 씨앗형 사업을 진행하고 있습니다. 주요 내용은 한국어학과에 사용될 한국학 관련 표준 교재(한국 역사, 한국 문화, 한국 문학)를 개발하는 것입니다. 올 10월까지 전문가 감수를 끝내고, 내년 3월까지 e-북으로 제작할 예정입니다.

과제 진행에 관한 특별한 어려움은 없습니다. 다만 서로 다른 대학에 재직 중인 교수들이 직접 얼굴을 맞대고 교재를 개발하는 것이 아니라, 비대면 회의를 통해 교재를 개발하는 일이 살짝 어렵습니다.

5. 해외한국학사업을 진행하면서, 혹은 앞으로 꼭 이루고 싶은 장기적 목표나 바람이 있다면 무엇일까요?

실제적으로 태국 내의 한국학은 일반인을 대상으로는 하는 한국 문화 분야, 한국어학과 학생들을 대상으로는 기초 한국학 분야, 대학 교수들을 대상으로 하는 한국학 연구 분야로 나뉠 것입니다. 저의 개인적인 생각으로는 이들 중에서 한국어과 학생들을 대상으로 하는 한국학 분야가 제일 중요하다고 생각합니다. 한국어를 구사할 수 있는 이들이야말로 미래에 태국 내 한국학을 주도하고 연구하는 중요한 재원이기 때문입니다. 그래서 저는 이러한 재원들이 한국학 표준 교재를 사용한 후, 한국학에 더 많은 관심을 가지게 되었으면 좋겠다는 바람이 있습니다.

6. 저희 질문에 대해 답변해 주셔서 감사드립니다. 마지막으로, 태국의 한국학 발전을 위해 한국과 태국이 함께 할 수 있는 일은 무엇이 있을까요?

태국 내 한국학을 발전시키기 위해서는 한국학에 대한 다양한 노출이 필요하다고 생각합니다. 한류라는 것은 사실 인터넷 혹은 각종 미디어에 노출되었기 때문에 가능한 일이었습니다. 흥미로운 한국의 문화를 보여주었기 때문에 태국인들이 한국 문화를 사랑하게 된 것입니다.

반면 태국인들에게 노출된 한국학은 아주 적습니다. 태국어로 번역되거나 집필된 한국학 관련 서적의 수도 매우 적습니다. 온라인에서 대학생이나 교수 혹은 학자들이 볼 수 있는 한국학 논문도 찾기 힘듭니다. 대부분의 온라인 기관들에는 휴대폰 인증이 필요한데, 태국 현지에 거주하는 연구자들에게는 휴대폰 인증이 사실 불가능하기 때문입니다. 따라서 태국 내의 한국학 발전을 위해서는 양국 모두 한국학을 태국인들에게 보여주는 일에 힘써야 합니다.

Meeting with Korean Studies Scholars Abroad

Burapha University (Thailand)

1. Please introduce yourself to the readers of the KSPS Newsletter.

Hello. My name is Uraiwan Jitpenthom Kim, and I teach Korean language in the Oriental Languages Department at Burapha University in Thailand.

2. In Thailand, what is the current interest in Korean culture or what is the overall situation regarding Korean Studies research and education?

In Thailand, there is a very high level of interest in Korean culture. In particular, K-pop, Korean dramas, and Korean cuisine are very popular. If you ask students entering the Korean language major at Burapha University why they chose the major, most will say “K-pop.” Furthermore, ten Korean restaurants have opened near the university, and Korean dramas have also enjoyed steady popularity through global broadcast via services such as Netflix.

Thailand’s first Korean language department was established in 1999 at Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus. Since then, there are now 18 universities in Thailand that have Korean language, Korean language education, or Korean Studies majors. According to materials published by the Korean Culture Center of Thailand, as of 2022, some 46,000 students at about 180 middle and high schools are learning the Korean language, with Thai Korean language learners comprising 25% of all Korean language learners globally

As for Korean Studies education institutions in Thailand, Prince of Songkla University, Bangkok Campus, has a Korean Studies department, while Chulalongkorn University has a Korean Studies master’s program. Apart from this, Korean language departments at other universities include Korean Studies-related courses, such as Korean history, culture, and literature, as part of the curriculum for their third- and fourth-year students. An annual academic conference on Korean Studies for professors has been held for the last ten years, with an academic conference on Korean Studies for university students having been started in the past couple years. Therefore, it can be said that Korean Studies in Thailand is in a beginning stage, in which various research outcomes are beginning to emerge.

In actuality, the education and research of the Korean Studies field is different from the Korean language education department. Korean Studies is much larger in scale than Korean language education. Therefore, to the extent that the Korean Studies field is larger in scale, I think that more time is needed for it to be dealt with.

3. Please introduce Burapha University’s Korean Studies research and education activities, as well as the results or outcomes.

At Burapha University, the Korean language major was established in 2000 in the Oriental Languages Department within the Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Furthermore, a Korean Studies Center was also established within the Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Korean Studies-related fields are mostly conducted at the Korean Studies Center. The Korean Studies Center hosts activities such as academic conferences on Korean Studies, Korean language education seminars, publications of Korean literature in translation, and Korean language speaking competitions.

4. While participating in the Seed Program for Korean Studies (Beginning Track) since 2022, how has the project been going and what difficulties have you faced thus far?

Currently at Burapha University, we are conducting an AKS Seed Program for Korean Studies entitled “Basic Korean Studies Promotion Project for Thai Learners.” The main content of the project is the development of standard Korean Studies teaching materials (on Korean history, Korean culture, Korean literature) for use in Korean language departments. The review of the materials by experts was completed this past October, and we plan to publish the materials as an eBook by March 2024.

We haven’t faced any particular difficulty in relation to conducting the project. However, as the professors involved are all employed at various universities, we were unable to meet in person to develop the teaching materials, and so developing the materials via online meetings has been a bit challenging.

5. What long-term goal or wish do you hope to be achieved during or after this Seed Program for Korean Studies?

Korean Studies within Thailand can, in actuality, be divided into Korean culture fields for the general public, basic Korean Studies fields for Korean language major students, and Korean Studies research fields for university professors. In my personal opinion, among these, the most important is the Korean studies fields for Korean language major students. This is because, through their command of the Korean language, they can become important talents who will lead and research Korean Studies within Thailand in the future. So I hope that after using the standard Korean Studies teaching materials, these talents will come to have a greater interest in Korean Studies.

6. Thank you for your detailed answers to our questions. In conclusion, what work can be done together in Korea and Thailand for Korean Studies research?

In order to advance Korean Studies within Thailand, I think that diverse exposure to Korean Studies is needed. The Korean Wave was actually possible because people were exposed to it through the internet and various media. Because it showed the interesting culture of Korea, Thai people came to love Korean culture.

On the other hand, the Thai people have been exposed to very little Korean Studies. It is difficult for university students, faculty, or researchers to find academic articles on Korean Studies that can be viewed online. Most online institutions require phone verification, but this is impossible for researchers living in Thailand. Therefore, in order to advance Korean Studies within Thailand, efforts need to be made to show Thai people all of the Korean Studies both countries have to offer.
