(Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at SUNY Stony Brook)에 소속되어 여러 한국학 과목 및 동아시아 지성사를 강의하고 있습니다.

The Analects of Dasan: A Korean Syncretic Reading of the Analects라는 이름으로 영역하고 해설하는 일을 했습니다.

셋째, NSLI-Y (National Security Language Initiative for Youth)과 Faculty-Led Summer Study Abroad 프로그램을 운영하고 있고, 한국 교육부의 TaLK (Teach and Learn in Korea) for SUNY

Reading Classical Texts in Korean Humanism 1 & 2, Korean Humanism in Modern History, 그리고 Korean Humanists: Lives and Works를 듣습니다. 나머지 9학점은 Humanities Topics in Korean Studies (세부 주제가 다르면 반복 수강 가능), Intellectual History of East Asia, Korean Literature, History of Korea, Language and Society in Korea 같은 과목을 선택해서 채우면 됩니다.

Meeting with Korean Studies Scholars Abroad

Maria del Pilar Alvarez

(DEL SALVADOR UNIVERSITY)

Q. First, could you please introduce yourself to the readers of the Korean Studies Promotion Service online newsletter?

My name is María del Pilar Álvarez (María), and I am from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I currently serve as a Researcher at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), and as the Director of both the Center for Research in Korean Studies (CIEC) and the Master’s and Diploma programs in Korean Studies at the University of Salvador (USAL) in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires. I completed my Master’s degree in Korean Studies at Yonsei University as a KGSP scholar. Within the field of Korean studies, I specialize in contemporary political history. For 20 years, my research has focused on postcolonialism, historical memory, and human rights in South Korea-Japan relations. My latest book, Halmoni: La revolución de las abuelas coreanas [Halmoni: The Revolution of the Korean Grandmothers], was published by Penguin Random House in 2025 and is the first book on 'comfort women' in Spanish. Currently, I am pursuing two main lines of research that I consider highly relevant for Argentina and the Spanish-speaking world. On one hand, expanding on my work regarding human rights and memory, I examine the commemoration of the Jeju Massacre—a pivotal event that remains largely unexamined in Spanish. On the other hand, having begun interviewing North Korean defectors a few years ago, I am also deeply interested in their role in inter-Korean relations and contemporary Korean identity.

Since our very first Academy of Korean Studies project, my philosophy and objective have been to institutionalize Korean studies at both the educational and scientific levels in Argentina and Latin America. In our region, we face a major challenge: area studies (Korean, Chinese, Japanese, etc.) are not widely integrated within the university system. Therefore, unlike other previous Korean centers or projects in Argentina, my focus has been on translating efforts into concrete educational achievements. To this end, we launched the Diploma program in Korean Studies in 2020, established the Master’s program in Korean Studies in 2023, and that same year, redefined the Center for Korean Studies into a Center for Research in Korean Studies (CIEC). Ensuring our academic programs maintain a competitive standard of quality requires deepening Korean research across diverse areas—ranging from religious and historical themes to contemporary political and socio-cultural issues. It is also essential to approach the Korean Peninsula as a whole. Traditionally, scholarship in the region has been dominated by 'South Korean' studies; we believe in the complexity of analyzing the peninsula in its entirety. Another key goal has been to increase the quantity and quality of academic publications, which led to the creation of the Korean Studies Collection published by our university press (Image 2).

As the Director of CIEC, my role involves coordinating the center's research tracks, organizing various conferences and symposiums on Korea, and heading both the Latin American Network of Korean Studies (RECAL) and the Latin American Network of Graduate Students in Korean Studies (REPEC). Additionally, I manage the Korean Studies Book Collection and promote academic cooperation agreements with South Korea.

Q. The CIEC Korean Studies Research Center has continued its engagement with the KSPS program, progressing from the Seed Program for Korean Studies to the Core University Program for Korean Studies. Could you share the background and motivations behind your participation in these initiatives? In addition, we would appreciate your thoughts on the current level of interest in and demand for Korean Studies in Argentina and across Latin America.

After completing my PhD, I began working as a professor at the Del Salvador University in Buenos Aires. My university is unique in that it has hosted the country's only School of Oriental Studies since 1967, offering the only undergraduate program in Asian studies in all of Argentina. Given this rich tradition, I felt it was the right time to propose the creation of a Korean studies department. The first Seed Program for Korean Studies grant allowed us to establish this space through essay contests, expert lectures, and publications, among other activities related to Korea. To the surprise of the university authorities—though not to mine—many young people flocked to our Korea-related activities. Driven by K-pop and K-dramas, fascination with Korea has expanded significantly among younger generations. Interestingly, these fans often develop a deeper interest in more academic areas of Korean studies, such as literature, history, religion, feminist movements, and contemporary politics. Since there were no formal programs available to study Korea, during our second Seed Program, we launched the Diploma program in Korean Studies and submitted our Master’s program proposal to the Argentine Ministry of Education, which was approved in 2023. CIEC has been instrumental in enabling postgraduate students and Master's faculty to collaborate across diverse research tracks on Korea. Every year, more and more young people become interested in Korea from various perspectives and disciplines. This growing interest is visible throughout Latin America, and I believe it is vital that we offer robust educational and research opportunities to these new generations.

Q. Among the various initiatives currently undertaken by the CIEC Korean Studies Research Center, could you introduce some representative programs or activities that best demonstrate the Center’s capabilities and major achievements?

Our principal initiatives were to create REPEC and RECAL, alongside incorporating study scholarships and strengthening the ties between the Master’s program in Korean Studies and CIEC. Over these past two years of the Core University Program, in addition to establishing the Latin American Korean studies networks, we have successfully enhanced the academic quality of the Master’s program by bringing in prestigious guest professors and adding new full-time researchers and faculty members to our program. Furthermore, we launched new research tracks, and every year more students join us as researchers. In 2026, we published the book Religiones en la Península de Corea [Religions on the Korean Peninsula], and in 2027, we will publish Literatura e Industria del Libro Coreana [Korean Literature and Book Industry]. We have also published several specialized academic articles tied to our research areas, and have organized a wide range of conferences and symposiums on Korea.

Our Master’s program in Korean Studies is the first of its kind in Argentina, and CIEC is the very first center specifically dedicated to Korean research in Latin America. This has been an enormous achievement and a major effort that would not have been possible without the support of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS). We are clearly a benchmark for Korean studies at the regional level, drawing students from all over Latin America. Inspired by the Master’s programs offered at Korean universities, our curriculum covers all areas related to the Korean Peninsula, providing a comprehensive education that is highly valued by our students. Furthermore, we have sought to break away from the regional tradition of hiring Korean professors who specialize in Spanish or Latin American studies. Instead, we collaborate with, invite, and translate the work of prestigious Korean professors who are experts in Korean studies themselves. I believe this approach is vital to raising academic standards and enhancing our students' education.

Thanks to RECAL and regional conferences on Korean studies, we maintain a direct connection with all universities working on Korea across the region. In Latin America, we all share a common language—Spanish—which tremendously facilitates seamless communication and integration. We, as Latin Americans, possess a strong regional identity, and we leverage that shared identity to deepen cooperation, academic exchanges, and joint research projects.

Q. Have there been any notable cases in which the Center’s educational, research, or international collaborative activities brought meaningful changes to researchers or students? We would also appreciate it if you could share any particularly memorable experiences or inspiring episodes.

RECAL has enabled our students to connect directly with researchers across the region. A notable case is our collaboration with Korean studies specialist Camilo Aguirre from the University of Chile, who is currently supervising a thesis for one of our Master’s students and co-editing a book for our Korean Studies Collection, scheduled for publication in 2028. Another successful collaborative milestone has been our partnership with the Bachelor’s program in Korean Studies at the University of Nayarit; one of our students is currently writing their Master’s thesis on this unique undergraduate program.

Q. The CIEC Korean Studies Research Center has identified the establishment of a Korean Studies network within Latin America as one of its major objectives. In your view, what kinds of international cooperation and academic collaboration are necessary for the further development and expansion of Korean Studies in Latin America? Additionally, what role do you envision the Center playing in this process?

Although Latin America is a region with its own distinct identity, I believe it would be highly enriching to foster closer ties with Spain, where Korean studies are considerably more developed. This connection could serve as a valuable complement for our region. Unfortunately, since Korean studies organizations and events are typically structured by region or continent, Spanish experts participate in European networks rather than Latin American ones. Given our shared language and culture, establishing stronger links and increasing cooperation would be immensely beneficial.

Furthermore, expanding the reach of Korean studies requires providing more opportunities for the youth currently training in the field. Our students possess a very solid academic foundation, are proficient in the language, desire to supplement their studies in Korea, and address highly diverse topics in their research. I truly believe they represent the future of Korean studies, and we must grant them a larger space within the local academic community. Through REPEC, CIEC is deeply committed to connecting this new generation of Korean studies scholars, and we are well-positioned to play a leading role in that expansion and cooperation.

Q. What are your long-term goals and vision for this project? In particular, how do you expect this initiative to contribute to building a sustainable foundation for Korean Studies research and education in Argentina and throughout Latin America?

One of my greatest aspirations is for those currently in training to be able to consolidate their studies in Korea through research and language scholarships, so they can later join our program as professors in our Master’s degree and researchers at CIEC. Another milestone I hope to achieve is launching the very first PhD program in Korean Studies in the region

Q. Thank you very much for your time and insights. To conclude, do you have a final message for our newsletter readers, fellow Korean Studies scholars worldwide, or the Korean Studies Promotion Service?

For Argentina and Latin America, the Academy of Korean Studies programs have been pivotal to the development of Korean studies. Thanks to the AKS, at this moment in Argentina, for instance, there is a Master’s program in Korean Studies, yet there is no Master’s program in Japanese or Chinese studies. Although programs on China and Japan do exist, we have achieved a higher level of institutionalization for Korean studies—an achievement we share with the AKS.

Other forms of support from the AKS, such as fellowships, are also fundamental because they enable continuous training. Conducting research on Korea from such a great distance is highly challenging; we have to fly for over 24 hours just to reach Seoul! Furthermore, this is a region facing economic difficulties. In Argentina especially, the university system operates with extremely limited resources, making us highly dependent on foreign scientific agencies to consolidate our efforts. The AKS has been, and will continue to be, essential.
