상해 복단대학에서 열린 <동아예학여경학(東亞禮學與經學)> 국제학술회의에 연구진이 참석한 모습 (2019년 6월) 2024 Korean Ministry of Education Research Excellence Award The Classification and Compilation of Joseon Dynasty Family Ritual Materials by Category: The Creation of the Completed Collection of Joseon Family Rituals DO Hyeon Chul (Yonsei University, Korea) In the 1950s, an important perspective was raised in relation to the study of ritual scholarship (yehak, 禮學) during the Joseon dynasty: the so-called “theory of the seventeenth century as the age of ritual studies,” which continues to this day. This theory, on the one hand, analyzes ritual litigation (yesong, 禮訟) as a temporal transformation of factional strife (dangjaeng, 黨爭), grounded in the perception that factionalism was a chronic ailment of Joseon society, and thus sees the study of practical learning (silhak, 實學) as driven by the need to overcome it. On the other hand, it interprets factional strife as a natural political phenomenon, explaining the differences revealed in ritual litigation as rooted in divergent scholarly positions on ritual (ye, 禮), thereby elucidating its intellectual dimension. Through this approach, research integrating the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as a process of the advancement of Neo-Confucianism (seongnihak, 性理學) was invigorated. However, the ritual studies research sparked by this theory has faced criticism as individual scholarship has deepened and accumulated, particularly in relation to two major premises: the developmental model of “the advancement of ritual studies following the deepening of Neo-Confucianism” and the binary framework of “differences in ritual studies based on factional divisions.” The former explains the transition from the sixteenth to the seventeenth century as “the development of ritual studies through the deepening of Neo-Confucian thought in the sixteenth century, following the establishment of the dynastic ritual (jeonrye, 典禮) system in the early Joseon period.” Yet this neglects the fact that as early as the fifteenth century, research had already accumulated on rituals not only of state ceremonies but also those concerning the yangban elite (daebu, 大夫) and the commoners (saseoin, 士庶人). The latter extends the perspective of “factional divisions rooted in philosophical differences” into the study of ritual scholarship. However, attempts to identify “differences in ritual studies based on factional divisions” have run into difficulties, remaining at the level of micro-analysis of individual scholars. In this regard, current scholarship on ritual studies stands at a turning point: it must either develop an empirical, evidence-based approach to complement the “seventeenth-century ritual studies theory” or establish a new perspective to replace it. This study is based on new perspectives and methods for the study of ritual scholarship in the Joseon dynasty. The “new perspective” regards the culmination of Joseon ritual studies not as the seventeenth century but as the eighteenth century, and interprets its development as a cumulative flow advancing from shared concerns beyond factional divisions. This empirical viewpoint is grounded in a bibliographical analysis of commentaries and studies on Zhu Xi’s Family Rituals (Garye, 家禮) produced by Joseon scholars from the mid-sixteenth century through the early twentieth century. The “new method” involves the comprehensive compilation of the achievements of Family Rituals research in Joseon from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries through the early twentieth century. This provides an effective approach for comprehensively viewing the history of Joseon ritual studies, while also assembling the materials necessary for empirically examining similarities and differences in ritual theories (yesol, 禮說). This perspective and methodology distinguish the present study as original. With respect to Confucian ritual (ye, 禮), it functioned as a fundamental guideline for social organization, developed and institutionalized throughout East Asian history. Each dynasty established dynastic rituals (jeonrye, 典禮) to be enacted in official state ceremonies, while in the private sphere, households carried out family rites (garye, 家禮) to embody Confucian life. Such institutionalization and practice of ritual, in both the state and society, were critical factors that shaped East Asian identity in contrast to other cultural spheres. Therefore, clarifying the nature of the ritual governance (yechi, 禮治) culture established in East Asia is essential to reinterpret its social formation. In particular, the rituals autonomously practiced in society underwent diverse adaptations depending on local and temporal conditions after the emergence of Zhu Xi’s Family Rituals in the Song dynasty. Numerous related texts were produced. Moreover, whenever problems arose in the performance of rituals that could not be resolved through Family Rituals, attempts to resolve them generated continuous innovation in both texts and institutions. In Joseon, after the introduction of Family Rituals in the late Goryeo period, it gradually spread and by the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, issues arising in Joseon society were redefined and textualized at the level of ritual theory (yesol, 禮說). Thereafter, through the nineteenth century, continuous innovations occurred in both institutions and texts, and the social strata that practiced Family Rituals gradually expanded. As a result, nearly 500 commentaries and studies on Family Rituals were produced in Joseon from the fifteenth century through the early twentieth century. The institutional and textual legacy achieved in Joseon surpasses that of not only China but of any region in East Asia, both quantitatively and qualitatively. This indicates that the culture of ritual governance in East Asia, realized through Family Rituals in the private sphere, reached its apex in Joseon. This study has compiled, classified, and partially translated 234 commentaries and studies on Family Rituals produced in Joseon from the fifteenth century through the early twentieth century, organized by the categories of Family Rituals, in order to reconstruct the overall state and issues of Joseon ritual studies. The resulting compilation is named the Completed Collection of Joseon Family Rituals (Garye Daejeon, 家禮大全). The Completed Collection compiles the annotations of Joseon scholars alongside the text of Family Rituals, and, for each category, assembles both the questions raised in the course of ritual implementation and the debates of Joseon scholars regarding the composition of new ritual practices. The creation of the Completed Collection of Joseon Family Rituals is significant in three major aspects. First, it allows for a nationwide, long-term view of how Family Rituals were practiced and how they changed in Joseon society from the fifteenth through the early twentieth centuries. This concretely reveals the reality of ritual governance culture as it was realized in Joseon as a Confucian state. Second, it enables a cross-sectional reevaluation of the commonalities and differences in ritual theories across regions and scholarly lineages, together with their changes over time. In particular, by systematically examining discussions of problems unresolved by Family Rituals, it clarifies the process of the indigenization of Family Rituals in Joseon. Third, it enables comparative study of ritual culture across premodern East Asia, including China, Vietnam, and Japan. This can serve as a window for explaining the distinctive features of East Asian society beyond national boundaries and for discovering the universal implications of East Asian culture. Thus, the establishment of the Completed Collection of Joseon Family Rituals is meaningful as the creation of a comprehensive foundational resource for the study of Joseon ritual scholarship and East Asian Confucian culture. Yet this is not the end. First, although the Completed Collection compiles Joseon commentaries and studies on Family Rituals, other sources, such as individual literary collections (munjip, 文集) of Joseon scholars, also contain related materials. Second, the current compilation of the Completed Collection has not yet been processed into a format convenient for actual research use. Therefore, the Completed Collection must be expanded to include Family Rituals materials preserved in a wider range of sources, so that it becomes larger in scale and more comprehensive. Furthermore, it must be developed into a database to enhance its usability, making it applicable in diverse ways across disciplines, and reconstructed as an organic, collaborative research enterprise. The project’s principal investigator and research team [Jang Dong-woo (Daejin University), Han Jae-hoon (Sungkonghoe University), Jeon Seong-geon (Kyung-guk University), Kim Yun-jeong (Academy of Korean Studies), Jeong Hyeon-jeong (Yonsei University), Park Yun-mi (Hallym University), and Cha Seo-yeon (Kyung-guk University)] expect that this comprehensive body of Joseon ritual scholarship materials will stimulate innovative interdisciplinary approaches in the Korean humanities and social sciences, exerting significant influence in reinvigorating the study of Joseon history and East Asian culture in the future.0066
